The Kiyor
- Washbasin The basin was a holy vessel. Any water or other liquid that was left overnight in a holy vessel was unfit for use the following day. Therefore, the priests had to refill the basin every morning, which was quite a tedious task. Ben Katin - a High Priest - had a mechanism consisting of levers and pulleys that lifted the basin and lowered it into a pit of water, where it remained overnight. The pit was not considered a vessel, so the waters would not become unfit for use. The next morning the basin was raised and set into the place. The first sound heard in the Temple every morning was the sound of Ben Katin's device raising the basin, a sound that could be heard as far away as Jericho. |
