A wide-scale search for a bone marrow donor for 13-year-old Omri Attia of Holon has turned up a suitable donor for the leukemia patient, the Ezer Mizion health support organization announced yesterday.
This comes two weeks after the organization set up a donor day, during which it collected blood samples from 31,500 people to try to find a match.
This comes two weeks after the organization set up a donor day, during which it collected blood samples from 31,500 people to try to find a match.
"I'm really excited the donation was found," said Attia, whose family was informed Saturday night. "After I got the news, I jumped and danced. Now I can be a regular boy. This is a real Hanukkah miracle.
"I want to thank everyone who supported me. I hope blood marrow is found for all the sick children in Israel and that the whole nation will be healthy. I'm now on my way to a vacation in Eilat to celebrate the news."
Ezer Mizion collected 31,500 blood samples in its bid to help Attia, who was diagnosed with leukemia in January. The organization had half the blood samples analyzed in Israel and half in the United States to speed up the process, due to the urgency of the matter and the many blood samples it collected.
"The feeling is marvelous and wonderful," said Omri's father, Eli Attia. "A serious effort was made to find a donation, even though the chances were fairly slim. It's easier to win the lottery."
The transplant will take place in accordance with the timetable set by the doctors at Schneider Children's Medical Center of Israel, said Eli Attia.
